News of the Firm

Co-managing editor of the NC Bankruptcy Practice Manual

The North Carolina Bar Association Foundation publishes the North Carolina Bankruptcy Practice Manual, an excellent resource written by the state’s best and brightest.  The sixth and most recent edition was published in 2007, after the 2005 overhaul of the Bankruptcy Code but well in advance of the recession.

The seventh edition is scheduled for publication in the fall of 2012, and I’m happy and honored to be serving as co-managing editor with Deborah Tyson Crowder, law clerk to the bankruptcy judges in the Western District of North Carolina. Deborah and I have previously worked together on seminar planning and have represented opposing clients, and I’m glad to be working with her again.

Mitchell & Culp’s pro bono work

With so many people in financial need, we have made it a goal for our firm to exceed the hours we logged in 2010 for pro bono work in 2012.  A quick review of our records shows that we handled nine clients’ matters with no charge for our services, spending 69.9 hours on those matters, and that we handled two additional clients’ matters at a greatly reduced fee, spending 20.5 hours on those matters.  The poorest among us cannot afford the legal help they so desperately need, and it feels darn good to help them.

Mitchell & Culp’s Certified Paralegals

This past November, our paralegal Jennifer Short was certified by the National Association of Legal Assistants, Inc. as a Certified Paralegal.  She obtained this certification by successfully completing a rigorous and comprehensive two-day test on various topics that are key to the paralegal practice, and may maintain this status through certain continuing legal education requirements.  Both Jenny and Cindy Baker are North Carolina State Bar Certified paralegals, and we couldn’t be prouder of them.

New faces at Mitchell & Culp

In December, we hired Susan Korn and Kelly Spruill.  Sue works full-time on bookkeeping and accounting matters, and Kelly is with us part-time, providing administrative support.  Those who have been in our offices during 2011 know that we were getting pretty tight on space. The good news is that we’ve moved into a 750 square foot addition to our office space. We now boast an additional conference room, two additional offices, and a kitchen, all from an adjacent office that was recently vacated in our building.

We look forward to better serving our clients’ needs through the addition of both staff and space.
